Amman in 48 Hours: A First-Timer's City Guide

B Bayari Holiday Team • schedule1 min read
Most Jordan itineraries treat Amman as a place to land and leave, but the city rewards even a short stop. Built across seven (now closer to twenty) hills, its skyline mixes Roman ruins, Ottoman-era downtown streets, and a fast-growing contemporary art and café scene. Start at the Amman Citadel for panoramic views over downtown and the Roman Theatre below — the two sites can be combined into a single morning. Rainbow Street and the downtown souks are best explored on foot in the late afternoon, when the heat eases and the cafés fill up. Jordanians take their coffee seriously, and a stop at one of downtown's traditional coffeehouses is worth building into any city walk. For clients with only a layover, the Citadel plus a downtown walk fits comfortably into a half day. For a full 48 hours, add the Jordan Museum for context on everything they'll see later in Petra and Jerash, and a evening in the Abdoun or Weibdeh neighborhoods for Amman's contemporary dining scene. Amman also works well as a hub: most of our Hotels catalog's Amman properties are within easy reach of the airport, making the city a practical first-and-last-night base for multi-city Jordan itineraries.
