Jerash: The Best-Preserved Roman City You've Never Heard Of

B Bayari Holiday Team • schedule1 min read
Jerash is routinely described by archaeologists as one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities anywhere outside Italy, and it's only about 45 minutes north of Amman — making it one of the easiest high-impact add-ons to any Jordan itinerary. The site's colonnaded main street, the Oval Plaza, and two well-preserved amphitheaters give visitors a genuine sense of scale that ruins elsewhere often lack. Many itineraries pair a Jerash morning with Ajloun Castle in the afternoon — a 12th-century Ayyubid fortress built to watch the Crusader routes, about 30 minutes further on, rounding out a full but comfortable day trip from Amman. Jerash gets considerably less crowded than Petra, so a half-day is usually enough, and there's no need to arrive at opening time the way Petra rewards an early start. It's an easy recommendation for clients who want a genuine ancient-world experience without extending their itinerary by a full overnight stay.
